Today is Day 7! (Which is fairly inaccurate, so just pretend "Day 7" means "7 Days Left".)
Today, I'll be talking about the characters of Divergent.
Characters are an extremely important part of a book for me. If I don't like the characters, I usually end up disliking the book as well. I have to connect with them, or at least admire them. In Divergent, the characters were my favorite part.
Beatrice "Tris" Prior is our protagonist. She is strong. She is fierce. She is vulnerable. She is smart. And I totally have a huge girl-crush on her. I love the character development in Tris. She starts out as a small, rather weak girl, afraid to break away from her family and strict life in Abnegation (the faction for the selfless). By the end of the novel, though, she's a kick-butt, powerful, no-nonsense fighter, ready to take on anything that comes her way. She also has a soft and caring side, one that makes her protect her friends and those she loves.
Four is also an amazing character. He starts out as just a normal instructor. But as the book progresses, Tris (and essentially, the reader) notices that Four recognizes certain things. He's different. He doesn't buy anyone's crap. He sees through things. He's secretive, wise, thoughtful, and protective. Four has many, many layers to his character, and although we uncover many things about him in Divergent, I know that we'll find out even more about him in Insurgent.
Jeanine is a villian that you can't help but hating. The things she does, the way her mind works, just her whole character--it's evil and horrible. She's selfish. She's scheming. And she's awfully intelligent, which makes things worth by tenfold. Christina, Will, and Uriah are all really great secondary characters. They truly care for Tris, and even though they're supposed to be competition to each other, they support one another. Veronica Roth can seriously write amazing, in-depth characters.
The characters are only one out of a billion reasons as to why I love Divergent. Have you read Divergent? If yes, what did you think of the characters? Did you love them as much as I did? Who's your favorite?
Day 6 will be about the romantic relationship between Tris and Four!

I have read Divergent and totally agree with you in the importance of characters in a book. If I don't connect with the characters, I most likely will put the book down. Thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteThough I haven't read the book yet, I've heard a lot about Four. He is a popular choice for a book boyfriend so I have to say he's my favorite character. I can't wait to read that post about the romance. That is my favorite part about reading, discovering the love story. Though character development is an important part of that.
Yesss I have read Divergent! I really love Tris' transformation, definitely one of my fav YA protagonists. Tris and Four were great together, I loved that they were EQUALS and I can't wait to find more about him in Insurgent. Never going to get used to his...other name though, ha. Can't wait to see the rest of your countdown, Sophia. :)

I haven't read Divergent yet but I've been dying to get my hands on it D: I've read so many great reviews on it.
ReplyDeleteI HAVE read Divergent. Oh my word, I LOVE it! It was one of my top 10 2011 reads, I loved it that much. I think my favorite character was Four. Not because he's "dreamy" or whatever, but because he's a well-written, fascinating character. He's intelligent, strong, caring and honorable. Basically, an all around good guy who just happens to be able to kick some serious butt. I can't wait to read more about him in Insurgent.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the amazing giveaway! Love your post! :)
